ICH BIN RUTH Das kurze Leben der Ruth Maier Tagebücher und Biefe, Wien 1934 – Oslo 1942

© Appollonia Theresa Bitzan

Ruth Maier was born on 10 November 1920 in Vienna. After Ruth‘s sister fled to England in December 1938, her mother and grand-mother followed within half a year. Ruth emigrated to Norway and hoped to do her A-levels there. She initially stayed with a family, later she looked for work at the Women's Labour Service and met Gunvor Hofmo at Biristrand. The two became lovers and lived together for a time until Ruth was arrested in November 1942 and deported to Auschwitz. She was murdered there immediately upon her arrival on 1 December 1942. The play version of ≫Ich bin Ruth≪ consists exclusively of texts by Ruth Maier from the years 1934 to 1942. All the song texts, which Clara Luzia has set to music and arranged for ≫Ich bin Ruth≪ are from Ruth Maier. And the productions of the theatre performance are made up in part of original photos and copies of Ruth‘s drawings and paintings.
