DIE ERSTEN Von den Frauen, die die Welt entdeckten

© Andreas Baumgartner

Explorers have beards. Explorers know where to go. Explorers are men. Right? Of course not! As an excentric collector of stories, Perdita Polaris, full of the joy of discovery, sheds light on things forgotten, Simone Neumayr delves into the lives of four exceptional women from four different centuries. In the 18th century, the naturalist, Jeanne Baret, was the first woman to circumnavigate the world - disguised as a man. The Viennese housewife, Ida Pfeiffer, achieved fame in the Biedermeier period as a solo world traveller. Valentina Tereschkowa was the first cosmonaut in 1963 to negotiate the career jump from a textile factory into space, while the Arctic explorer, Felicity Aston, was the first woman in 2012 to cross the Antarctis on her own. The inspiring stories of these four women, who surpass themselves, are recounted by Henry Mason in his new play for children in humorous, exciting and poetic theatre images. It makes people curious, gives courage and inspires the imagination.
