SCHÄXPIR, the biennial theatre festival for young audiences, is entering its 13th round and will take place in Linz from 3 to 14 June. This time under the motto WHAT REMAINS. The festival is dedicated to the questions of where we come from and where we are going. The great global stories - stories of creation, myths, fairy tales, birth and death - will be told in a cross-cultural, multidimensional and diverse way. As usual, the festival period will once again be filled with a wide variety of plays and formats - on stage and in other unusual places.
Julia Ransmayr and Sara Ostertag are once again responsible for the programme. Anja Lang is the organisational director. "SCHÄXPIR is a place for young theatre, a theatre for everyone," emphasise Ostertag and Ransmayr: "2025 is the year we embark on the mission ‘What remains’, which will be fulfilled with a great variety and a wide range of plays." A lot can be summarised under this headline. Themes and problems that are currently hot topics in society. "Theatre for young audiences must be relevant and understood as an art form to be taken seriously. It has to be a safe place where young people are taken seriously and seen in the different realities of their lives," explains Anja Lang.
In its 13th round, SCHÄXPIR will once again manage to bring all of this together. With a wealth of theatre forms and genres - from drama and dance performances to concerts and elements of visual art and immersive installations. However, SCHÄXPIR not only stands for many different aesthetics, the trio of directors are also keen to cater for a very broad age spectrum. The range extends from 1 to 15 years. This scale, range and diversity definitely characterise the festival.
The festival team is also asking the question WHAT REMAINS off the stage? That leads directly to the topic of sustainability! In 2025, SCHÄXPIR is once again a green event and doesn't organise rubbish. SCHÄXPIR is accompanied and certified by the Upper Austrian Climate Alliance team.
The festival will take place over 11 days for the first time in 2025. This means that schools will have enough time to attend the performances and, thanks to the Whitsun holidays, families will also be able to enjoy the SCHÄXPIR hustle and bustle in Linz.
"The SCHÄXPIR theatre festival has already become a fixture in the hearts of culture lovers in Upper Austria. It is a real highlight, especially for young audiences, and will once again enrich the Upper Austrian cultural and theatre landscape with national and international productions in 2025," emphasises Governor Thomas Stelzer.
